How it works

From the door to a decision.

Vira does three things at a hospital’s entrances: it checks people in, it checks their ID against official state registry data, and it recognises people the hospital has barred. Whatever it finds, a person decides what happens next.

Check-in

A visitor arrives at the kiosk.

Visitors, vendors and contractors all check in the same way, on an iPad kiosk in the lobby, at the dock, or wherever your hospital receives people.

  1. Scan the license

The visitor scans the barcode on the back of their driver’s license.

  2. Take a photo

The kiosk takes a photo for the badge. Vira doesn’t save it. The kiosk can also compare it with the photo on the license.

  3. Check the ID

Name and date of birth from the license are checked against official state sex-offender registry data, added state by state from each state’s official list. It never searches the registry by face. If your hospital turns it on, staff also see whether the visitor’s photo looks like each possible match’s official photo.

  4. Print the badge

A badge prints and the visitor appears on the list of who is in the building. If the registry check finds a possible match, it goes to staff to review.

Watchlist

Your watchlist, at every entrance with a camera.

Your hospital adds the people it has barred to its watchlist, such as people under a trespass order or former employees who may not return. For each person on it, Vira keeps only a faceprint: a set of numbers made from a photo, not the photo itself. The cameras already at your entrances recognise those people when they arrive.

  • Cameras only recognise people on your hospital’s watchlist. They don’t look for anyone else.
  • No video is recorded. Vira looks at the live picture and lets it go straight away.
  • A possible match tells staff which camera and what time. No picture is kept, only the camera, the time and what staff decided.

Review

A person always decides.

A possible match is a question for your staff, not an answer. Vira never turns anyone away on its own.

  1. A possible match appears

From the registry check at the kiosk, or from a camera at an entrance.

  2. Staff review it

Security staff look at the possible match and decide whether it is the same person.

  3. Staff act, under your policy

What happens next is your hospital’s decision and your hospital’s procedure.

  4. The decision is recorded

Every possible match and every staff decision is kept on record.

Cameras and setup

Start with the cameras you have.

Vira works with most modern security cameras, either directly or through the video recorder they already connect to. An entrance camera may need to be pointed a little differently so it sees faces, not the tops of heads. Your IT team can find the technical details on the For hospitals page.

  4. Your staffReview and decideEvery decision kept on record

There is no equipment to install for the cameras. Vira does the work outside your hospital: the video is sent over an encrypted connection, checked, then thrown away. It is never saved.
